A tribute to South Africa's great teachers from the people whose lives they have changed. At a time when our newspapers are full of the woes of the South African education system and stories of teachers who let the children in their classes down, this book is a celebration of heroic teachers who have struggled, often against great odds, to give children a chance of success. Great South African teachers celebrates the massive contribution of remarkable teachers working in South African schools, past and present. The stories, contributed by over 100 South Africans in response to advertisements placed in the Sunday Times, pay tribute to the teachers who changed their lives. The contributions reflect the full range of South African schools – rich, poor, white, black, schools under apartheid, schools urban, rural, schools past & present.
